Day 280

“Your King Is Humbly Coming”

Matthew 21:1–11; Luke 19:29–35

While Jesus was in Bethany, Judas, one of the disciples, went into Jerusalem. There he spoke with the leading priests: “What will you give if I betray Jesus to you?” They paid Judas thirty pieces of silver. From that moment, he looked for a chance to double cross the Lord.

Meanwhile, Jesus was headed for Jerusalem. “Go into the village ahead,” he instructed two disciples. “You’ll find a donkey and her colt that’s never been ridden. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, don’t worry. Say, ‘The Lord needs them.’ He’ll send them right away.”

The two disciples found it just as he said. The owner asked them, “Why are you untying the donkey?” They said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought him the donkey and her colt. They spread their cloaks over the animals’ backs. Jesus rode the donkey from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem.

Long before Jesus was born, Zechariah the prophet said this would happen. He wrote: “Look, Zion, your king is humbly coming to you. He’s riding on a donkey and on a donkey’s colt.”

Questions: How much was Judas paid to betray Jesus? What did Zechariah say about Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem?
