Day 231

Trouble in Nazareth

Part One
Luke 4:16–24

Jesus went back to his hometown of Nazareth. In the synagogue, Jesus stood up to read from the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. I’m anointed to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to call out “freedom!” to the captives and give sight to the blind; to let the overloaded people go free; and to proclaim the year of God’s grace to everyone.

Then Jesus rolled up the scroll and handed it back. Everyone was looking at him. He said, “Today these words have come true.” Everyone was amazed at his gracious words.

But then someone said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son? We know his brothers and sisters. How can he teach us?”

Jesus said, “You’re thinking: ‘Why doesn’t he do miracles like he did in Capernaum?’ I’ll tell you the truth. A prophet is never welcome in his hometown.”

Questions: What is one thing the Scripture said Jesus had come to do? Why did the people question Jesus?
