Day 130

The Punishment of Jeroboam

1 Kings 14:1–20

Jeroboam’s son, Abijah, became very sick. The king told the boy’s mother, “Disguise yourself. No one must know you’re my wife. Go to the prophet Ahijah and ask if the child will get well.”

The Lord said to Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife is coming to see you. Tell her what will happen to her son.”

“Welcome, wife of Jeroboam,” said the prophet. “Tell Jeroboam that the Lord says this: I made you the leader of my people. I ripped the kingdom away from David’s family for you. But you have done more evil than any other king. I’m very angry because you made false gods. So I’ll bring evil to your family. All of your children will die. The family of Jeroboam will disappear like burning trash.”

Ahijah continued, “Go away to your house, woman. When your feet enter the city, the child will die. Israel will be taken from this good land. They’ll be scattered far away because of the Sin of Jeroboam.”

Jeroboam ruled twenty-two years in Israel and died. His son Nadab then became king.

Questions: Why was God so angry at Jeroboam? What did God say would happen to Israel because of the Sin of Jeroboam?
