Day 109

David Spares Saul’s Life

1 Samuel 24:1–22

David ran to the Rocks of the Wild Goats. He hid from Saul in a dark cave. Saul came alone and rested there. “Here’s your chance,” David’s men whispered. “Kill your enemy.”

“I won’t harm God’s anointed king,” David said. Instead, he crept out and cut the corner from Saul’s cloak.

Saul awoke. As he walked away, David called, “My lord the king.” He waved the piece of cloak. “This proves that I don’t want to hurt you.”

And Saul began to cry. “May the Lord reward you with good. Now I know that you will be king of Israel.”

Questions: Why wouldn’t David kill Saul? How did Saul know that David would be king?
