Day 46
God’s Passover
Exodus 12:1–30
None of the terrible things that had happened to Egypt hurt Israel.
God said to Moses, “In a few days you are all to leave Egypt. Be ready to go when the time comes. This month is the beginning of the new year for Israel,” God went on. “I want every family to find a perfect lamb. On the fourteenth day of the month, they must kill it. Take its blood and put it on the door frame. There must be blood on every door. Then roast the lamb and have a feast. Eat it fast, and be ready to travel. It is my passover.
“I will pass through Egypt that night. The oldest boy in every family will be killed. The blood on your doors will be a sign. When I see the blood, I’ll pass over your house. Your boys will not die when I strike Egypt. Always remember this day and keep this feast.”
Israel did what they were told. That night came, and a great cry went up all over Egypt. In every house the oldest son died. But Israel had the lambs’ blood on their doors. The destroying angel passed over them.
Questions: What would happen if there was no blood on a family’s door? Why was this called God’s passover?
