Day 353

Paul Dodges an Ambush

Acts 24:27–25:12

Anew governor named Festus came to power. As a favor to the Jews, he kept Paul in prison. In Jerusalem, the priests and leaders gave Festus a bad report about Paul. “Do us a favor,” they said. “Send Paul here. We’ll settle this problem.” In fact, they planned to ambush Paul and kill him.

“No,” replied Festus. “I’ll be in Caesarea soon. You come down, and we’ll settle this.” In Caesarea, the Jews falsely charged Paul, but they lacked proof.

“I’ve done nothing against the Jewish law,” Paul replied. “I didn’t pollute the temple, and I always respect the Roman emperor.”

Festus said, “Do you want to go to Jerusalem to settle this?”

“I’ve done no wrong to the Jews. You know this. I’m not trying to escape. But I’ve done nothing that deserves death. So no one can turn me over to them. Instead, I’ll take my case to the emperor in Rome.” Paul knew he’d be killed if he went back to Jerusalem.

Festus talked with his council. Then he said, “You want the emperor to hear your case. Therefore, you will go to Rome.”

Questions: Why didn’t Paul want to go back to Jerusalem? Where did Paul want to take his case?
