Day 38

Egypt Punishes Israel

Exodus 1:6–22

The people of Israel increased and filled Goshen. Then a new king ruled. He didn’t remember Joseph. This pharaoh was afraid that Israel would become more powerful than Egypt. He made Israel’s people into slaves. Israel was forced to make bricks for Pharaoh’s cities. They had to give Egypt most of their food. In spite of this cruel treatment, Israel grew larger.

Pharaoh then made a terrible law. All the baby boys born in Israel must be killed. But their nurses let them live. So Pharaoh ordered the babies to be thrown into the river.

Questions: Why was Pharaoh afraid of Israel? What did he do to the people of Israel?
